Workers compensation is often a mandatory form of insurance for businesses, which provides wage replacement, and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of employment.
This form of insurance serves two purposes: It provides medical care and compensation for a portion of the income that injured workers lose while they are unable to return to work and it generally protects employers from lawsuits by workers injured while working.
Payments are made to the injured party and may cover medical payments, loss of wages, and the cost of necessary therapy. If a worker is killed while working, workers comp (as it is often abbreviated) provides death benefits for the worker’s dependents.
